Buying Tips
- Make sure the bike fits you -- if you've stopped growing, there should be two to three inches of clearance over the frame on
mountain bikes, one inch on road bikes, two inches on cross bikes.
- Buy a bike that suits your needs! If you never go off-road, a cross bike is suitable.
- Does the bicycle dealer stand behind its products? Do they ride or race bicycles? Personal experience is important.
- Do they do repairs -- will they be there when your machine breaks down?
- Test-ride the bike - look at how it's assembled. Is there grease in the stem and seat tube? Are the wheels true? Proper initial
assembly is the key to bicycle enjoyment and comfort, and this is often an indication.
- Check the bicycle warranty - most bikes have a lifetime frame warranty. Parts warranties usually last one year. Some
shops extend parts warranties.
- Make sure you look closely at the parts. Are the derraileurs and drive train parts compatible? Ask the salesperson how
the components rate. Reading a few bike magazines will give you an idea.
- Are the parts and frame of equal quality? Often department stores or mass merchants will put good parts on a cheap frame
to make the bike look like you're getting extra value. You get what you pay for!
- Do they carry a good parts selection? When you need replacement parts, it's great when you get back on the bike right
away.
- Enjoy your bike and maintain it regularly. An overstretched chain can really damage your drive train, then you'll have to
replace all your sprockets. Preventative maintenance is the key to a safe and healthy bike.
